Best Walking Shoes for Europe Travel (Stylish + Comfortable)

Later in this post I share a few affiliate links. I may earn a commission if you click on them and make a purchase, at no cost to you. I really appreciate your support!

Travelers often assume that Europe’s compact city centers will be a breeze to navigate on foot.

BUT IT’S COMMON TO WALK MORE THAN 20,000 STEPS IN A TYPICAL TRAVEL DAY IN EUROPE (🤯).

Add in queueing for attractions or the occasional sprint through a train station, and you can understand why good shoes are a necessity for travelers.

Packing the right shoes for Europe can make or break your trip.

At the same time, though, space in your luggage is likely at a premium, and you probably want to look fashionable while strolling through cities like Paris, Rome, and London

SO HOW CAN YOU PACK THE RIGHT SHOES, WHICH WILL PROTECT YOUR FEET BUT ALSO YOUR FASHION SENSE?

Below, I’ve collected my recommendations for the types of shoes that deserve a spot in your suitcase — from a reliable pair of travel sneakers to fashionable flats and even, yes, heels.

For each category, I’ve highlighted current styles if you’re looking to add a new pair to your collection, as well as those shoes that have been frequently purchased by past Notes From Europe readers.

Walking Shoes for Travel

A GREAT PAIR OF WALKING SHOES IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.

If you only pack one pair of shoes, make it a comfortable, stylish travel sneaker that can survive a 20,000-step day.

Europe’s cobblestone streets are charming, but brutal on unsupported feet.

Athletic sneakers are a great choice because they prioritize arch support, cushioning, and a wide-enough toe box.

From a style standpoint, the great divide is between a pair of classic white sneakers and the more modern colored sneakers.

Personally, I like both — though I do find myself reaching for my pink Adidas Gazelles more often than my white Adidas Sam Smiths

White sneakers are great, but you have to make an effort to keep them looking pristine.

I WOULD ALSO RECOMMEND FOAM-SOLED RUNNING SHOES FOR THOSE WHO ARE PRONE TO FOOT PAIN.

My Adidas Adizero Evos are an example of these, but lots of Notes From Europe readers love these On Running Cloudnovas, too.

Can you tell that I really like Adidas shoes? I guess it’s a byproduct of living in Germany.

My Adidas Gazelles get plenty of use when I travel.

Best Sneakers for Travel

  • New Balance 327 * – My current obsession. Retro styling meets all-day wearability. I especially love these for cities like Berlin or Lisbon where the vibe is sporty but cool.

  • On Running Cloudnova Form 2 * – If you want the feel of a running shoe but the look of a fashion sneaker, this Swiss brand nails it.

  • Ecco Soft 7 * – Understated white leather sneakers with podiatrist-approved support. A favorite among travelers who value both comfort and versatility.

  • Adidas Gazelle – Iconic street style, and better support than you’d expect. Size up if you have wider feet.

Best Sneakers for Travel for Men

  • New Balance 2002r – The same retro styling that New Balance has become known for, but with reinforced arch support for comfort.

  • On Running Cloudsurfer 2 – A versatile running shoe made of premium materials that gets high marks as a walking shoe, too.

  • Ecco Soft 7 Men’s – Sleek white leather sneakers with reliable support and a polished, minimal look.

  • Adidas Gazelle Men’s – A German classic, these suede sneakers are comfortable and stylish.

Fashionable Flat Shoes

There will be days you want to look more pulled together, whether that’s for a nice dinner reservation, a luxury shopping spree, or just because you’re in Paris and it feels wrong not to look your best.

THIS IS WHERE A COMFORTABLE PAIR OF FLAT SHOES COMES IN.

Flats take up less space in your suitcase, and you can easily dress them up or down.

I especially love point toe flats and leather loafers for that polished look, but ballet flats are also a great choice.

And if you’re traveling in the middle of summer, breathable sandals with cushioned soles may be the best choice.

I love this woven version of Margaux’s The Demi flats.

Comfortable Flat Shoes for Women

  • Rothy’s The Point * or Max Square Ballerina – Made from recycled water bottles, these come in every color imaginable and are machine washable. The Point is my favorite and looks especially chic with dresses, while the new Max Square Ballerina feels incredibly fresh with its squared toe.

  • Margaux The Demi or The Point * – Luxe leather flats with memory foam insoles. They mold to your foot over time.

  • Everlane Day Glove Flat * – Buttery soft leather and a walkable, molded sole. I wore these all over Madrid.

  • Le Monde Beryl Stella Mary Jane — A splurge-worthy pair of leather Mary Jane ballerinas.

  • M.Gemi The Sacca Donna – Handcrafted Italian loafers that feel more supportive than ballet flats.

  • Birkenstock Arizona * or Madrid Big Buckle – A true Euro original, the comfort on these German-made sandals can’t be beat. Try the EVA version for beach or rain days.

  • Teva Leather Sandals *– These aren’t your dad’s hiking sandals anymore. Teva’s newer leather lines are stylish and supportive.

  • Doc Martens Casual Derbys — A classic black shoe that can be dressed up or down, though you probably want to break them in before long travel days.

  • Quince Penny Loafers — This is a staple loafer style, made of calfskin leather, and available in a variety of colors.

  • Birkenstock Arizona — A staple for a reason, these German sandals are comfortable and durable in equal measure.

How to Wear Heels on Vacation

Here’s the truth: you don’t need heels for Europe.

But if you like to dress up, or you have a special dinner or event planned, it’s okay to bring a pair.

JUST MAKE SURE IT’S THE RIGHT PAIR.

Think low block heels, wedges, or dressy ankle boots.

The key is choosing shoes that work with multiple outfits and won’t destroy your feet after 20 minutes.

  • Margaux Paloma Sandal – A gorgeous leather block heel that’s easy to walk in and goes with everything.

  • Dr. Martens Spence Chelsea Boot– The classic Docs silhouette as a sleek pull-on boot with a lifted heel. Made of durable leather and a cushioned sole. Great for fall or winter trips when you want a little edge with your outfit.

  • Margaux City Sandal – Sleek design, padded footbed, and a sturdy block heel.

  • Stuart Weitzman Dayna Espadrilles – A classic espadrille with leather uppers, these pair perfectly with summer dresses.

Conclusion

The best shoes for Europe travel are comfortable and confidence-boosting.

A great pair of sneakers, a stylish flat, and a just-in-case heel will give you the flexibility to dress for anything on your itinerary, without overstuffing your suitcase.

Pick styles you’ve already broken in, and opt for neutral colors that will pair well with multiple outfits.

Your feet, and your future self, will thank you.

Until next time,

Angela
